  1. How to Teach Kids to Read Time
    Step 1
Confirm that your child can count to 60. Ask the child to write the numbers down or recite them aloud. Counting to 60 is essential, as there are 60 minutes in each hour. Also ensure your child can count to 60 in increments of 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, and so on.

    Step 2
Introduce your child to the face of a traditional clock. Explain that the short hand marks the hours and the longer hand shows the minutes. Also introduce your child to the second hand, which marks the seconds as they pass.

    Step 3
Explain to your child the halves and quarters of the hour. Use a toy clock to explain that when the minute hand is pointing up, the hour is even and that when the minute hand is pointing down, it is the “30.” Explain also that when the minute hand is pointing directly to the right, it is the “15″ and that if the minute hand is pointing directly to the left, it is the “45.”

    Step 4
Set a toy clock to an easy time, such as one o’clock. Guide your child through reading the clock: “The hour hand is pointing to the one, and the minute hand is pointing straight up. What time is it?” Make a simple change–to two o’clock or three o’clock–and again ask the child to read the time. Repeat this until the child can confidently read the hour.

    Step 5
Set the toy clock to a more difficult time, such as 4:15. Ask your child to read the time. If the child has difficulty, guide him through the time the same way you did in step 4: “If the hour hand is pointing to 4 and the minute hand is pointing directly to the right, what time is it?” If necessary, remind your child of the halves and quarters of the hour from step 3. Repeat as necessary until the child can confidently read the 15s, 30s and 45s of the hour.

    Step 6
Explain that each numeral on the clock correlates to the minutes in an hour. Point to the 1 and say that it means 5 minutes, then point to the 2 and say that it mean 10 minutes, and so on. Note to your child that the 12 is simultaneously 0 and 60; remind your child that, when the minute hand is pointing straight up, the time is right on the hour. Tell your child that if the minute hand is between numbers, then the minutes are also between those numbers. Use the toy clock to denote various times, such as 8:20 or 11:40. Ask the child for the hour, then help your child count–by fives–to the appropriate minute. Repeat this activity until the child can independently deduce the time.

    Step 7
Give the toy clock to your child. Ask the child to move the hands to a time you say, such as 5:30 or 12:45. Use this as an opportunity to relate this to your child’s daily life: “What time does your favorite cartoon start?” “What time do you wake up in the morning?” “What time does school start?” Finish by asking your child to read a real clock; ask for the current time.

    Tips and Warnings
Different children learn to tell time at different speeds. If your child is showing difficulty in learning to read time, don’t try to accomplish this task in one day. Teach reading the hours one day, then reading the quarter- and half-hours the following day. Wait another day or two before introducing the fives and tens as well as the numbers in between. In step 6, if your child is familiar with the five-times table, you can instruct the child to simply multiply a number by five to determine the appropriate minute. There are a variety of activities you can use to help teach your child to read time; Time for Time provides a variety of activities and plans for parents and educators to aid in teaching time.
